Construction Update: September 23, 2014

Take a Tour: Executive Director Katie Loughary is offering tours of the construction site after
service each Sunday. The tour provides a fascinating and enlightening glimpse of the renovation
work in progress. Tours are offered after each service. Note that there will be no tours on
September 28th and October 5th.

Last Week (September 15-19, 2014):

• Drywall installation and repairs, as well as plastering work, continued in the renovated
spaces.
• Pipes for our new heating system were installed.
• New pavers were installed at the 16th Street front entrance.
• New outside lamps were installed near doors. They look great (see the photo below of the
new lamp).
• Conduit was installed for lights on the terrace. We will have LOTS of light there.

Over the next two weeks…

• Pepco is expected to switch the building over to new power panels, which are already in
place. Once this happens, testing of the elevator can begin!
• Pavers for the terrace should be delivered.
• Cement will be poured for the front (16th Street) ramp.
• Painting work will begin.
• Analog lines will be installed for fire alarms, security hardware, and areas of refuge
within the building. An area of refuge is designed to hold occupants during a fire or other
emergency when evacuation may not be safe or possible.
• The new coffee machine has arrived and will be hooked up in Pierce Hall.

Construction Update: September 18, 2014

Last Week (September 15-19, 2014):

  • Drywall installation continued. The rooms and spaces are really taking shape.
  • Installation of the elevator proceeded.
  • Cement was poured for the new ramp on 16th Street.
  • Work was ongoing on the installation of the terrace’s green roof.
  • Pipes for our new hot water heaters were installed.
  • Options and estimates were being developed for the repair of the steeple. Stay tuned.

We are on track for…..

  • Completion of Phase 1 by Thanksgiving!! Phase 1 will include the new gathering space, the lower level renovation, the new ramp, the green roof terrace, two of the three new main-level bathrooms, as well as infrastructure improvements.
  • Completion of the new kitchen by Christmas!!
  • On-time completion of the entire project by early spring 2015!!

Last Week (August 25- 29, 2014):

  • Considerable progress was made on the installation of drywall in the lower level rooms. These rooms are really taking shape (see photo). katie tour photo-3
  • New hot water radiators are beginning to appear in the hallway.  It is expected that all of the new heaters will be installed by November.
  • The chandeliers were cleaned. Check out before and after photos (below).
  • Damaged concrete was discovered on the steeple. Repair options are being investigated.

Coming Up Soon:

  • Drywall and hot water radiator installation work will continue.
  • The Otis Elevator Company will start elevator installation work.
  • Mock-ups of the new gutter system are expected.
  • Water and electrical connections will be provided for a new Pierce Hall coffee machine by Homecoming Sunday on September 7th, or soon thereafter.

Construction Update: August 26, 2014

Last Week (August 18- 23, 2014):

  • More drywall was installed in the new lower level rooms.
  • The Otis Elevator Company delivered equipment for the new elevator (under construction — see photo).

  • New cement slabs were completed in old stairwell locations.
  • Framing work was completed for the ceilings in the new gathering and fellowship area and in the new bathrooms.
  • The new chiller unit was installed in the playground.
  • Cranes were used on Saturday to install new heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) units on flat roofs of the church.

Coming Up Soon:

  • Drywall installation and framing work will continue.
  • Otis will start elevator installation work.
  • A mock-up of the new gutter system is expected.
  • By Homecoming Sunday on September 7th, water and electrical connections will be provided for a new Pierce Hall coffee machine.

 

Construction Update: August 20, 2014

Last Week (August 11-16, 2014):

  • Considerable progress was made on the installation of drywall in the new lower level rooms.
  • Existing steam radiators have been removed and hot water pipes are being installed for the new system.  It is expected that the new heaters will be installed by November.
  • On Saturday, a 200-foot crane was brought in that enabled structural engineers to inspect the steeple.  The engineers found some cracks and are preparing a report on the extent and seriousness of the damage.
  • Selection of paint, tile, and countertops was completed.  To be finalized is the selection of millwork for a lower level conference room and for the new front desk.

Coming Up Soon:   

  • Drywall installation and hot water pipe work listed above will continue.
  • On Saturday, August 23rd, a crane will arrive on 15th Street to load HVAC equipment onto the roof.
  • Workers from the Otis Elevator Company will be onsite this week to start elevator installation work.

By Homecoming Sunday on September 7th, water and electrical connections will be provided for a new Pierce Hall coffee machine (hurrah!).

Last Week (August 4-8, 2014):

  • Work started on the renovation project’s Phase 2 activities, including removing bathroom ceilings and radiators in areas closer to the south side of the building, as well as window repairs.

Coming Up Soon: 

  • A construction crane will be onsite Saturday, August 16th beginning about 8 a.m. to work on the steeple. Harvard Street will be blocked off for the crane operation, which might be fun to watch.
  • A construction crane will also be onsite on Saturday, August 23rd to mount rooftop RVF heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) units.
  • Tile and counter-top options will be displayed in Pierce Hall after church next Sunday, August 17th.  Congregants will be able to submit comments on the options. The comments received will help guide selection decisions on the tile and counter-tops.
  • All Souls member Jen Bolick, who chairs the interior design committee, will be advertising for committee members to work on furniture selection for the new common areas being created.

  • Work continued on the installation of drywall in many areas of the project.
  • Progress was made in completing the replacement of old electrical panels.
  • Church staff started the selection of paint, tile, and countertops for the project.

Coming Up Soon:   

  • Repair work on the steeple has been scheduled for Saturday, August 16th and 23rd.   On these dates, Harvard Street will be blocked off for the crane that will be used for this work.
  • Gutter work will continue.
  • The church will continue to await news about whether we have been awarded a preservation grant for which an application was submitted.
